In a visit to the Banc d’Aliments de Catalunya, the Minister of Agricultura, Ramaderia, Pesca i Alimentació, Òscar Ordeig, highlighted that the Diagnosi del malbaratament alimentari a les llars de Catalunya 2024: quantificació, impacte ambiental i socioeconòmic shows that this food waste registers a loss of 112 euros per year per person.

The study was commissioned by CREDA and IRTA with the aim of evaluating and quantifying the economic, social, and environmental impact of food waste in households. According to Ordeig, “preventing waste will make us a more socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable society.”

With initiatives like this, the Department’s intention is to prevent food waste throughout the entire production chain. Thus, the Strategic Plan for the Prevention of Food Loss and Waste in Catalonia will be presented in early 2026, since the total kilograms wasted in homes in 2024 could feed more than 250.000 people for a year.

The Catalan Food Strategy is an initiative of the Government to achieve a more sustainable, transformative food system based on the circular economy.
